Federal Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon today encouraged local councils and not-for-profit community groups to apply for grants available under a new $40 million National Crime Prevention fund announced today by the Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice Jason Clare.
The National Crime Prevention Fund will target crime hotspots, and will fund:
· Grants to local councils for security infrastructure like closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and lighting; and
· Youth mentoring and outreach programs run by not-for-profit community organisations.
Mr Fitzgibbon said that this was a great opportunity for local councils and not-for-groups to fund local crime prevention projects.
“Local councils will be able to apply for funding for CCTV and other security infrastructure, which is important in keeping the community safe.
“In addition, not-for-profit groups can apply to fund programs that target young people at risk of falling off the tracks and getting involved in crime.
“As a community we know what will work locally. This program gives us the chance to work together to reduce crime.
The grants are being funded by assets seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Fund.
“We’re taking money seized from criminals and using it to reduce crime in the community”, Mr Clare said.
As well as the grants available to councils and community groups, $5 million will be used to expand Father Riley’s Youth off the Streets Outreach Service, and $5 million will be made available for projects run by Police Citizen Youth Clubs (PCYCs) and Blue Light organisations.
Applications for grants will open in the first week of May, and will be open for four weeks. Projects must be completed by the end of June 2015.
