BREAKING ELECTION PROMISES AS EASY AS ABC

Tony Abbott plans to break his promise that there would be "no cuts to the ABC", Mr Joel Fitzgibbon said today.

On the night before the 2013 Federal Election Tony Abbott promised on SBS News: "No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS."

Joel Fitzgibbon said Tony Abbott’s pre-election promise is looking like being a lie.

“The Sun Herald has revealed that Tony Abbott has indeed made promises he does not intend on keeping and he plans to break these promises in the upcoming Budget,” Joel Fitzgibbon said.

"This is an issue of trust. If Tony Abbott cuts the ABC's budget it will mean he has lied to our community and it will show you can't trust him.

“If Tony Abbott breaks this promise it won't just hurt his integrity, it will also hurt services important to our community and be a clear example of the Government’s twisted priorities.”

ABC Managing Director Mark Scott said he could not guarantee that cuts to the ABC's budget would not affect their services, including radio services in rural Australia.

“Everything is on the chopping block if Tony Abbott breaks this promise,” Joel Fitzgibbon said.

“Valuable and popular content such as sport, drama, regional services and children’s programming could all be impacted, which will have an adverse effect on our community.”
