The Abbott Government’s back-down on Medicare Rebates for Practice Nurses is good news for rural and regional Australia.
The Rural Doctors Association had expressed surprise at the decision and said it: “will place even more pressure on already overworked rural doctors to meet patient demand for services”
They went on to say: “The decision will impact on the most vulnerable in our community – the disabled, the young and the aged”
Practice nurses not only take the pressure off GPs, they make an integrated inter-disciplinary approach to primary health care possible.
It’s hard enough to attract GPs to rural and regional areas. The Government’s now over-turned decision would have made it even harder.
