Hunter Seniors Forums connect community

Members from the local seniors community converged in Cessnock and Morisset on Thursday April 6 for two Hunter Seniors Forums organised and hosted by Federal Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon.

The forums were organised to provide information to seniors in response to calls for help regarding changes to the age pension assets test, scams, residential aged care arrangements, and telecommunications queries.

Guest speakers at the events included crime prevention officers from Lake Macquarie and Cessnock police, representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services who spoke about My Aged Care and Centrelink services respectively and local solicitor Marlie Caban who offered seniors related legal advice.

The format of the forums allowed locals to connect face-to-face with Government departments, take part in question and answer sessions as well as the opportunity to engage with and ask questions of Mr Fitzgibbon about a range of Federal Government issues.

“It’s for Government to ensure people have a decent retirement income, access to good health care and a range of retirement living choices. But my seniors’ forums help people maximise their well being and lifestyle outcomes by helping them make the right decisions on a whole range of matters,” Joel Fitzgibbon said.

More seniors forums are planned for different locations in the Hunter electorate later in the year. Details will be announced closer to the events.
