Continuing his lack of care for the dairy industry, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has sent a National Party backbencher out to meet with dairy farmers affected by drought, callous business practices and global commodity price falls.
The sector’s challenges grew dramatically in April when Murray Goulburn and other processers retrospectively cut the price they pay farmers for their milk.
Now backbencher Senator Bridget Mackenzie has learned that dairy farmers cannot access Centrelink support, something we’ve all known since Barnaby Joyce doctored his Hansard in 2014.
Barnaby Joyce loves talking about and wrongly taking credit for commodities which have recorded price increases, but for farmers struggling in the face of falling prices, his silence is deafening.
Our dairy farmers don’t need more round-tables, they need help.
