LABOR WELCOMES NEW CHAIR OF AUSTRALIAN LIVESTOCK EXPORTERS' COUNCIL (ALEC)

The Opposition welcomes the appointment of Simon Crean as the Chair of the Australia Live Exporters' Council.

Labor congratulates Simon on his appointment and looks forward to working with him in his new role.

There could be no more suitable and experienced person than Simon to lead a sector that is facing both challenges and great opportunity.

As a former Minister for Agriculture, Trade and Regional Australia Simon knows the sector well and its important role in our economy.

I’ve no doubt Simon will play a critical role in further building community confidence and support for the sector.

We also thank the out-going Chair Peter Kane for his hard work and successful period in the role.

I really would like to believe that Simon Crean has the welfare of all animals in Australia in mind as he does his new job. Evidence of horrendous cruelty is still coming in. Surely Simon Crean should act to stop this. Ending live animal exports, as labour has done in the past and exporting chilled beef would create more jobs, we would have control of the abattoirs – and – this unspeakable cruelty to Australian animals would stop. It would be so much better for the cattle industry, I can’t understand why we do not value add this product.
