Today the Member for Shortland Pat Conroy MP the Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon MP welcomed the opening of stage 1 of the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange.
Mr Conroy welcomed the opening but said there was more to do to finish the project.
“It was great to be able to attend the opening of stage 1, section 1 of this very important piece of infrastructure this morning,” Mr Conroy said.
“But there’s more to do, while I welcome the money for another study announced in this week’s NSW budget for the interchange, I again call on the Federal Government to commit to help fund the Pennant Street Bridge, that is section 2 of the LMTI.”
The last Federal Labor Government invested $13 million in the project and at the last election Labor committed a further $13 million to build the Pennant Street Bridge.
Independent studies have found that for every $1 of public money spent on the interchange, it will stimulate $94 of private sector investment, and create over 10,000 jobs.
Mr Fitzgibbon paid tribute to Lake Macquarie Council for supporting the project with its own funding.
“It not common for a Council to make such a substantial contribution to a project like this and both the Federal and State Governments should see the value in leveraging off that commitment with their own financial contributions,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
