A Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Newcastle will be a good thing if it can meet environmental and safety standards and it’s not an excuse to do nothing else on the gas market front.

In particular, it can’t be an excuse to dither further on the proposed Narrabri coal seam gas project which if approved, will bring cheaper domestic gas to market.  It’s time to make a decision on the Narrabri project.

We need not only more gas, we need multiple sources of gas to provide the competition necessary to put down-ward pressure on energy prices, both for businesses and households.

Gas alone doesn’t produce electricity.  It can though fuel a gas-fired generator and the Hunter desperately needs one.  A new gas-fired power station will help keep the lights on, put downward pressure on electricity price and create local jobs.

The Commonwealth and NSW Governments must do everything in their power to ensure AGL and any other proponent of a gas-fired electricity generator has gas supply certainty.
