Today is National Meals On Wheels Day and it was a pleasure to join some of the almost 80,000 volunteers delivering meals across Australia today.
The service offers more than just a meal as important as that is. Meals On Wheels volunteers provide important social interaction for those largely confined to their homes, they check on them, feed them, and make their day more cheery.
Morisset-Toronto Meals On Wheels is one of the 740 branches around the country which service around 53,000 clients and I was impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of its volunteers.
This is a vital service worthy of the strongest support of government. Our seniors are facing increasing cost-of-living pressures and pension payments are not keeping pace. That makes the service more important than ever.
It’s particularly important in regional Australia where 68 per cent of the meals are delivered. I pay tribute to Meals On Wheels and all who continue to deliver its services 60 years on from its beginnings.
