The Prime Minister’s decision to call off next week’s House of Representatives sittings is an extraordinary act of desperation I have not seen in my 22 years in the Parliament.
The cancellation of the House has little to do with the Same-Sex Marriage Bill and everything to do with the survival of a chaotic and dysfunctional Government.
The Government was to be two House Members down next week with both Barnaby Joyce and John Alexander facing by-elections. Facing possible defeat on the floor of the House, Malcolm Turnbull has taken his bat and gone home.
By using marriage equality as an excuse to cancel the House, Turnbull has admitted he has no policy or legislative agenda. This is a Government which has stopped governing.
