SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AT MUSWELLBROOK

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will start traffic and safety improvements on the New England Highway at Muswellbrook this week.

Mr Fitzgibbon said the road was identified under the Federal Blackspot Program and the Australian Government provided $350,000 for the work. “Work involves reducing two northbound lanes to one just south of Hebden Road by installing a median and a wire rope barrier for one kilometre.

“In the five years to June 2010 there were five crashes on this section of road. Two of the crashes resulted in serious injuries and two of them were fatalities.

“The work aims to improve safety and reduce the impact of crashes,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“To reduce the impact to motorists, work will be carried out at night from Sunday to Friday from 7pm to 5am. Work will start on tomorrow and take about two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

The speed limit will be reduced to 40km/h while work is carried out.

Motorists are advised to plan their journey, allow extra travel time and follow all signs.
