THE NATIONALS ARE A JOKE, THE REGIONS HAVE BEEN BETRAYED

Joint Media Release

THE HON CHRIS BOWEN MP SHADOW TREASURER MEMBER FOR MCMAHON

JOEL FITZGIBBON MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE

Reports tonight that National Party MPs were tricked by their Liberal colleagues into supporting higher fuel excises shows all Australians exactly how divided and dysfunctional this hopeless government is.

The fact that the National Party were hoodwinked into supporting higher fuel taxes – through a ploy to abolish the diesel fuel rebate – will send shockwaves throughout regional Australia.

All Australians now know that the Liberal Party lied before the election. Tonight we’ve learnt that it’s not just the voters they lie to – they lie to their own colleagues as well.

We can now add the Nationals to the long list of Australians betrayed by this Budget.

The fuel tax is a betrayal of every Australian motorist – but it is a massive kick in the guts for people in the bush.

Our regions have been completely betrayed, and the Nationals can’t even put up a fight.

This is a huge embarrassment for the Coalition’s junior partner, and it shows how ineffectual they are inside the government.

If the Nationals had any integrity and any independence from their masters in the Liberal Party, they will vote against this unfair slug on rural and regional motorists.

If Acting Prime Minister Warren Truss really wanted to stand up for people in regional communities, he would join the Labor Party in voting down this unfair tax.

If the Nationals support this fuel tax, people in regional Australia will never, ever forgive them.
