TIME TO ACT ON DAIRY CRISIS

Labor welcomes the concessions the ANZ Bank has announced for those farmers affected by the current dairy crisis.

Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Joel Fitzgibbon, wrote to all major lenders a week ago and now calls on the other banks to follow the ANZ’s lead.

More than 24 hours have now passed since Barnaby Joyce claimed caretaker conventions made it difficult for him to adequately assist farming families in need. While the Agriculture Minister indicated he would consult with Labor as the alternative government, we are yet to receive any contact from him.

More than three weeks after the crisis first hit, farmers are becoming increasingly impatient with the Turnbull Government’s failure to adequately respond.

Labor remains ready to support any appropriate response to the crisis but dairy farmers can’t wait any longer.

Labor is preparing our own response; but in the hope of providing a package prior to
July 2, we are willing to work with Barnaby Joyce if he is indeed serious about a bipartisan approach.
