LABOR STANDS UP FOR OUR MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Labor will vote in the Senate today to re-instate the ban on the Geelong Star’s capacity to trawl at night.

The ban was put in place in May following unacceptable by-catch levels including the netting of nine dolphins.

Since October 2014, the Abbott Turnbull Government has been sitting on the report of the Labor Government-initiated Expert Panel on a Declared Commercial Fishing Activity.

The failure to respond to the Panel’s report has allowed uncertainty about the impact of large mid-trawlers on the marine environment and protected species to grow.

The Government has walked away from any opportunity to re-assure the community that the operations of large mid-trawlers with refrigeration capacity are sustainable.

Labor calls upon the Turnbull Government to respond to the report of the Expert Panel.
