Not-for-profit community gardens, farmers markets, food rescue groups and community health are the big losers from the Abbott Governments short-sighted, mean-spirited and misguided decision to abolish the Community Food Grant program.
The $1.5 million program was announced as part of Labors National Food Plan and brought local communities together to grow, prepare and share food. The initiatives helped raise community food knowledge and promoted healthier diets. It also helped not-for-profit groups distribute surplus food to disadvantaged individuals.
The program recognised the increasing importance of the community food sector in growing and supplying fresh, local food.
The initiatives would have helped raise community food knowledge and promoted healthier diets.
Importantly, the initiatives also helped not-for-profit groups distribute surplus food to disadvantaged individuals.
Many kids today have limited knowledge of the source of our food and the program helped support food education.
Community garden and farmers markets organisations right around Australia will be bitterly disappointed by the Abbott Governments decision.
