DROUGHT AFFECTED COMMUNITIES USED AS PAWNS IN POLITICAL SPIN

As the drought continues to bite in Queensland, farmers and the wider community will be disappointed at being used as pawns in political spin as Warren and Barnaby pat themselves on the back about their failed White Paper initiatives.

Yesterday’s announcement was just another cruel media opportunity and one that is fooling nobody.

The devil is in the detail with the grand announcement:
• It has been 6 months since the Turnbull/Abbott Government announced funding for shovel ready infrastructure projects in Longreach on 9 May 2015
• Funding guidelines were not released till 30 June 2015
• A small number of projects were announced in October
• Yesterday’s announcement is about a project that is expected to be undertaken next year during the dry season from April to November 2016 – almost 12 months on from the initial announcement in May 2015.

Sadly, we also know that there are drought affected communities which the Government is refusing to acknowledge and which is adding further pressure to those on the land.

Drought affected communities urgently need genuine assistance, not more political spin at their expense.
