Labor welcomes the Government’s announcement that the reporting date for the review of the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL) is to be brought forward and the Chair, former Liberal Senator Chris Back, is to be replaced.
The review of ASEL has been delayed by this Government for three years, waiting another twelve months was an unacceptable outcome.
Former Senator Back was a Barnaby Joyce appointment. Labor believes that the review committee should be led by someone truly independent of the live sheep trade.
The Government needs to appoint a new and independent chair as a matter of urgency.
