BACKPACKERS TAX REMAINS A SCARY REALITY FOR NT FARMERS

One week after the self-imposed 6 April review deadline, the Abbott/Turnbull Government Backpackers Tax remains a scary reality for Australian farmers.

Today we toured Tou’s Garden, a large mango farm that is employing up to 100 backpackers. The operators are very, very worried.

We were told that the backpackers tax will have a significant, negative impact on the agricultural sector in the Northern Territory, which has a backpacker labour force of up to 85 percent.

If the backpacker labour force is disrupted there are no other options, as the Northern Territory simply does not have the required workers.

The backpackers tax was yet another thought bubble from an increasingly dysfunctional Abbott/Turnbull Government, and it is clear that the Government failed to properly consult the affected sectors on the impact of this new tax.

The Government has now announced two reviews into its own tax but neither has provided farmers with any reassurances.
