NOT AN EXCITING TIME TO BE AN AUSTRALIAN THOROUGHBRED BREEDER

This week the Turnbull Government agreed to a request from Australia’s sweet potato and chestnut growers for an industry levy to fund research, development and marketing initiatives.

Labor supports both the request and the approval but is concerned that the same request from the country's thoroughbred breeders for an industry levy has been denied without explanation.

Thoroughbreds are an important and valuable part of the agriculture portfolio. The sector has a clear plan on the R&D front including much needed work in disease and parasites, breeding methods, foal health and horse injury.

Australia's thoroughbred breeders deserve the same consideration as others in the agriculture sector, striving to enhance productivity, profitability and their contribution to the national economy.
