PRIME MINISTER MUST KEEP LIVE TRADE SYSTEM STRONG

Today the Prime Minister told the Parliament that his Government does not intend to toughen Australia’s animal welfare protection in the live export trade.

I call upon the Prime Minister to also pledge there will be no softening of the regulatory regime and the consequences for those who breach it.

Labor supports this important trade and believes building and maintaining confidence in it is vital to the sector's sustainability. A strong system that has the confidence of the public is good for farmers, exporters and animal welfare.

The Government’s decision to scrap Labor’s Inspector General for Animal Welfare and Live Animal Exports is a disappointing decision that diminishes the integrity of the system.

If the Prime Minister wants to keep the live exports system strong, he must reverse this decision.
