PROGRESSION WELCOMED, BUT NO CURE FOR FAILINGS IN INDONESIA

Labor welcomes the progression of our live trade prospects in China.

But Barnaby Joyce’s effort to exaggerate the short to medium term benefits in an attempt to cover for his failings in Indonesia is disappointing.

While welcomed, the finalisation of necessary health protocols by Australian exporters is the first of many steps required before Australian commodities can be exported to the China market under reduced tariff regimes. Commercial agreements, import permits and other technical barriers still have to be overcome.

With respect to China this will take considerable time yet, but the Indonesia situation is a reality hitting Australian producers right now.

Securing greater diversity in our export markets requires the Minister to walk while chewing gum too, which amongst all his self-imposed distractions Barnaby Joyce is struggling to do.
