R&D GRANTS - ROBBING PETER TO PAY PAUL?

I welcome the announcement today that the Abbott Government may be finally delivering on $26.7 million worth of research and development grants.

Tony Abbott went to Australian voters with a promise of $100 million in additional funding for Rural Research and Development Corporations.

Yet to date, not one extra cent has flowed on to Rural Research and Development Corporations and not one new agriculture research and development project has begun.

In the fact the Abbott Government cut $11 million from the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation and $80 million from the Cooperative Research Centres in the last Budget. On top of this, the Government cut $114 million out of the CSIRO.

I note too Barnaby’s announcement did not acknowledge that this funding is going to be offset by the cost he will be imposing by the forced removal of some RDCs out of Canberra.

If the Abbott Government is serious about increasing funding it would do so without robbing Peter to pay Paul.
